2008.09.21 - Mojo 13 - Wilmington, DE W/ Kyndread, Pelvic Fury, Circadian Rising.

We showed up a bit early, apparently I hit the pole when i parked, and i didn't even realize it. Bitchslicer was supposed to play but the drummer was sick. So they started the show late, which was cool cause we were playing first. We setup, then I ordered a drink from Victoria the bartender and show putter oner. Then Barret comes running to tell me there was a gauntlet arcade game. I pressed a button and it turned out that it was set to free play. Holy shit we played gauntlet indeed. Then as we made it to level 13 taco starts yelling to us from the stage, I geuss its time to go on.

Mike's Steaks, 16th and Market. $4.50, cheesesteak

Mike's Steaks is one of the few carts in the city that has a name. Directly across from Lou's steaks this is the closest thing that center city has to pats an genos(::facepalm). The first thing I noticed was that this was the cleanest cart I had ever seen. Maybe it was new, but the hole thing seemed to shimmer, and the inside seemed incredibly organized. There was a young girl running the cart by herself, and she seemed quite capable of doing so. However It was starting to rain, and not too many people were out.

Mama's Vegetarian, 18 S 20th Street. $6, Large Mama's Sandwhich,

From the outside Mama'a looks more like a flower shop then an eatery. Just look for the green awning with the red tomato and you should be fine. A few steps in and you feel like you're in an old Italian deli that hasn't had any work done to it since the 70's. Except without many products, and a few tables. This is the kind of place I love. Behind the counter the employees seem to be mostly kids, which is usually not a good sign. We'll let that slide and check out the menu. The only thing I could afford for this column, and still fill myself up seems to be the Large Mama's Sandwich.

17th And JFK - Nameless cart, $4, Gyro W/ Can of Mountain Dew and a bag of UTZ Cheese Curls

I chose this cart as my first review because it is my favorite for hot dogs. Mostly because of the deal they have of 2 hot dogs, a bag of chips, and a can of soda for $2.90. Plus they always have the UTZ cheese curlz with all of their MSG goodness. I normally don't order anything else here because the kid who took over a few months ago always seems clueless.

Eating Cheap in Center City Philadelphia

I had this idea a few months ago, but just decided to actually do it. My mission is to find places to eat near my work for under $6. Then to let everyone know what I though. I will try to stay away from chain stores and pseudo yuppie joints, focusing mostly on locally non franchised restaurants and carts.

Some general Grievances of food in center city

  • Even if its just a cart come up with a name
There are carts everywhere in this part of the city, usually running for breakfast and lunch. But less then %10 of them have names. This is just lame
